What is it?
The nuts & bolts
Compassionate Communication is based on Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a set of tools and suggestions for communicating
in a compassionate way. Developed by a pyschologist (Marshall Rosenberg) who firmly believes
in that human beings have a fundamentally compassionate nature, NVC is
a set of suggestions for using language to help us tap into that
wellspring of compassion.
NVC can help us:
* resolve conflicts;
* empower ourselves;
* be more understanding of ourselves
and others;
* maintain a more empathic connection
with others;
* say and hear "no" more easily;
* transform blaming and criticism into
something helpful;
* figure out what we really need, then
ask for it.
Starting with an Observation that creates common ground, the NVC model progresses to identifying the Feeling being experienced that is independent of the other person. Next we identify the life-enriching universal human Need that is or isn't being met, and finally end with a Request to ourself or to another person. We find this process usually out the compassionate nature in people.
Developed by Marshall Rosenberg and administered largely
through the
Center for NonViolent Communication, NVC is taught all over the world
by over 200 certified trainers, as well as informal instruction by
candidate (non-certified) trainers and supporters.
